Pensionado (Retiree) Visa
The most popular option for retirees. Requires proof of $1,000/month lifetime pension (Social Security, military, government, or qualifying private pension).
- 2-year temporary residency, renewable
- After 3 years → apply for permanent residency
- Import household goods duty-free (under Ley 9996)
- Import up to 2 vehicles tax-free
- Access to CCSS universal healthcare
- Cannot work for CR employers (but can own a business)
Inversionista (Investor) Visa
Invest $150,000+ in qualifying assets — including real estate. This is the natural choice if you're buying property in Costa Rica anyway.
- Real estate investment qualifies (titled in your personal name)
- Same benefits as Pensionado
- Can actively operate your business
- Investment must be maintained during residency
Digital Nomad Visa
Work remotely from Costa Rica with a $3,000/month income minimum ($4,000 for families). Valid for 1 year, renewable once. Tax-exempt on foreign income.
